    Undergraduate thesis project. This project is a concept design combining graphic design and science. The design was inspired by the DNA Gel Electrophoresis experiment I did at Nanjing Agricultural University.

DNA Gel Electrophoresis (SCGE)
Electrophoresis is a process that enables the sorting of molecules based on size. Using an electric field, DNA can be made to move through a gel made of agar or polyacrylamide. This experiment was very inspirational to me and my design process.

Staining Process
The staining process is the use of Mercuric Bromophenol Blue as a stain for Electron Microscopy in order to capture the DNA in a visual form.

The experience of viewing the magnified DNA profile inspired me to translate the scientific theory into graphics.

Book Living in the Water
People say that life originated from the sea. I created this installation piece by using the water element to show its connection to the evolution of life.

Book Design:
The book covers the documentation of the DNA experiment, the evolution of the plant, and the evolution of the mind.

Poster Design
The poster design includes the DNA gel graph overlay with a music sheet.

To make this poster interactive, I placed fiber optics on the high notes of the music sheet and used a motion sensor to allow people interact with the poster by simply walking up it.

This is my undergraduate thesis project. This concept design is about evolution from my perspective and includes a book, an installation and an interactive poster design. To understand evolution, I first ran an experiment on DNA. The experience viewing the magnified DNA profile inspired me to translate the scientific theory into graphics. The book includes the documentation of the DNA experiment, the evolution of the plant and the evolution of mind. The installation piece used the water element, because of its connection with life. The design of the poster includes the DNA gel graph overlay with the music sheet. To make this poster interactive, I placed optical fiber on the high notes of the music sheet and used motion sensor to allow people interact with the poster. When people walk by the poster, the optical fibers change color in response to people’s motions to make this poster interactive and engaging.
